One More Month!
Posted on December 04 2015
At the moment I am sitting on my couch with 5 Word documents open: the first draft of my Master’s thesis, the bibliography, a draft of a press release for work, a petition for the Dean of my college, and the one I am currently writing. I keep repeating to myself “one more month.” In a month’s time my graduate coursework will be over, I’ll have a diploma hanging on my wall, and I will no longer spend most evenings catching up on homework and reading after a full-days work and a few hours devoted to Pure Barre.
The past few months has been a trying time. I started a new job that demands far-more than 40 hours a week, I am in the home stretch after spending nearly 6 years at the same academic institution, and I became an addict… an exercise addict that it.
I know that I am overloaded. Time and again my friends and family have told me that I have too much on my plate. But hey, it’s just one more month now! The obvious thing to remove from my schedule is Pure Barre. I’m under no contract. The hours I spend there could be put to use on homework, reading, or even sleep – something that is foreign to me at the moment. But I will not get rid of the one thing in my schedule that I need most.
Over the last 6 months, Pure Barre has given me the outlet I need to move forward. Four or Five times a week I go to a place where women support each other, care about each other’s well being, and cheer each other’s goals and accomplishments. For every crossed finishline, engagement, pregnancy announcement, wedding, graduation, and even crises and emergencies, the Pure Barre DC family supports and aids both their team and their clients.
I have felt this encouragement. We have clients and team members at Pure Barre who I can bounce paper ideas off of, ask career advice, and even just vent about my loaded schedule. While I haven’t had much time for sharing meals and drinks with friends in this crazy period of my life, I’ve found a support system at Pure Barre that encourages me to keep going and that reminds me, “One more month!”
I am greatly looking forward to pressing print and handing my final draft of the last paper in my academic career (for now) to my advisor. I won’t say I couldn’t have done it without my Pure Barre family. I could have. It wouldn’t have been as fun and instead of my barre addiction I probably would’ve turned to Diet Coke and Smartfood, which is certainly a less healthy option. I have support from my incredible family, my friends, and my coworkers, but knowing that I have Pure Barre to break up my day has certainly helped me through it.
As the Holiday season approaches and things get hectic, find the time for yourself. For some it’s going for a run, or going to a class, or even just stretching before going to bed. Whatever your thing is, look forward to it! And beyond that, take it seriously.
When I submit my next post, there will only be one Word document open on my computer. Cheers to one more month!
