New Space, New Start

I recently moved to a new place where I had no intention of staying for more than a year. For four months, I’ve been living partially out of a suitcase, sleeping on a borrowed twin bed, and each night I would look up from my single pillow at the generic art that hung on the walls when I arrived. I was living in limbo. During this interim stay in my current location, I was not allowing myself to settle down and enjoy the time I’m spending here.

A few weeks ago, I decided enough was enough. After extensive Pinterest browsing and ikea-hack shopping, I re-did my bedroom. I painted the walls, installed cork flooring where previously there had been a stained carpet, framed a couple dozen paintings and photographs I’d been collecting, finally took the bed I’d bought in college out of storage and assembled it, and properly designed my space. I did not simply unpack my suitcase and take my books out of the boxes they had been sitting, I created a space for myself.

This new space has motivated me to be more organized. I fold my clothes and keep my drawers and closet meticulously arranged by color and need. I make my bed every day. I make sure my surfaces are clear of clutter. I light a scented candle when I am in there. I even keep my bookshelves in color-order. While previously I was climbing over mounds of clothes to get to the bed that I could barely fit on with the two cats I share it with, I now feel relaxed in my clutter-free and modern space.

I am using this time in my life to reset, and to think about what I really want to do, where I really want to live, and what are the things I can do outside of work to make me happy. Restarting my life and setting goals has started with resetting my space. While not everyone has the luxury of completely re-doing a room, decluttering and making your room a space in which you want to spend 8 hours a day will give you the same sense of ease that it has given me.
