Justifying My Indulgences

Justification is my downfall. ‘Hey, you went to Pure Barre this morning; go ahead, get the burrito bowl. And after barre you worked a full ten-hour day at your job. You know, you should probably get some cheese on that. And after barre and your full workday, you have to go to school for a few hours and debate political ethics; get the extra sour cream. You deserve it!’
When you work a lot, work out a lot, have a busy schedule and too much to do, it is easy to justify turning treats into habits. Those justifications are my absolute weaknesses. I don’t really like sweets, I don’t drink soda, I don’t eat junk food, but I love tortellini with arrabbiata sauce, Chipotle, spicy tuna rolls, and red wine. Of course none of those foods are considered really bad for you, but they aren’t exactly health food either.
For the past few months I have been giving into the weaknesses. Hard. It started with a cup of tortellini next to my salad, then quickly turned into an overloaded plate that I couldn’t get enough of. I would get home from a 16-hour day starving and just wanting immediate satisfaction. And why not? I work hard. I deserve it. But I know that I can be healthier than I have been lately. I can eat better, indulge in my favorite foods less, and commit to changing my body and my attitude. I am ready to turn it around. I hate to beat the January dead horse, but it is a new year, and I can no longer use my exercise to justify my cravings.
Here are my New Year’s Resolutions:
Bring lunch to work at least 4 days a week
Complete 40 Pure Barre classes in 60 days
Walk the 2.4 miles to work at least once a week
Only give into my Chipotle and tortellini habit once a week
Go a month without alcohol
To me, this goal is simultaneously lofty and unbelievably attainable. I imagine a lot of you are reading and thinking, hey, I do that already. And good for you! Maybe you have your own indulgences and justifications? Maybe you are super-human and have managed to stave off your carb cravings and you are a much stronger person than I! I salute you! I, however, am weak. But I am going to do this.
